I am slightly behind here on blog....

I will get better at this. Not much time with a pc or desktop due to wifey and her nursing school. For some reason my 'smartphone" could never post pics here just comments. These are all quick 10-20 minute sketches. I still have to do the EBR sketch but I couldn't decide on that one. lol. The first pic is of course Frank and his bride and the Dino theme and last is my first idea for the Mythology theme. On my phone I did not see this weeks theme. *facepalm* So I will be working harder at this. Thanks for not booting me. =)

Catch-up 1: Hairy Bugger

Due to a big work load (not complaining) I've gotten behind. Trying to catch up this weekend. So, here we go. My Universal Monsters entry;

Loved "The Wolf Man" so much as a kid, I was a werewolf at Halloween three years in a row. Separated yarn, corn syrup for adhesive, and eyeliner for detail (there's a photo somewhere).

Not as accurate as I wanted, but, like I said, I'm trying to catch up.

So... there you have it. More soon.

Lon Time No See...by Steven E Gordon

I'm only a couple of weeks behind in posting (going on 3 weeks maybe?), but I thought tonight seemed like the right time to post this one.
When I originally came up with the idea to do the Phantom no one else had done him yet. That's what I get for waiting so long and wasting time doing stupid stuff like paying my mortgage.
Anyway here's the Phantom of Opera - the first Universal Monster played by Lon Chaney, who was really the first star of monster films. He started the whole 'playing the monster as a sympathetic figure' thing. Ever since I was a young boy and saw Jimmy Cagney play him on film (Man of a 1,000 Faces) and saw the scary diorama of the Phantom at the Movieland Wax Museum I've been a fan.

Sketch Card Catch-Up!

I've had a wealth of paying work lately with crushing deadlines (which is good!)  I've put off my entries (which is bad.)  So... here we go, catching up!

First, from the Lovecraftian week:

And now, a mash-up of X-Men, Universal Monsters, and a thark from Burroughs...

That catches me up.

Obviously, I did these on double-time, one sketch cards to get me back with the rest of the class (:

Week 5 - The O.U.M. - Original Univeral Monster

Well... Depending on who you ask... The Phantom of the Opera, starring Lon Chaney, was officially the 1st Universal Studios true HORROR film, though the Hunchback of Notre Dame did come before it as a historical drama, and Dr, Jekyll & Mr. Hyde was made before "Universal Studios" officially existed. I consider him the 1st true Universal Monster. Sketched into my Mokeskine. This scan seems a little off kilter. I'll rescan tomorrow on a better scanner and replace...

Ultimately, I want to do a 4-panel set of these guys on these small 5"x5" canvases.

10/28/2011 - Replaced with a better scan.

Dracula and Mina

Sorry for being late (yet again).
Downloaded a trial version of Painter 12 and started playing around with it, as I'd never used Painter before.
This is the result:

Quickie painting - I spent more time learning the layout and what the various tools did than actually painting.
Any tricks and tips are very much appreciated.

Creature

I almost didn't want to do this because Axel's looked so good, but I had it in my head to do so I wanted to put it on paper. It's scene from the movie done in my style. I really wanted to do a watercolor of it initially, but alas time got away from me so I decided to do a pencil sketch. Thanks so much for looking.

Creature of the Black Lagoon, by Axel Medellin

This has been my favourite subject so far! I'm having a blast here. And the Gill Man is one of the most perfect monsters out there.

I hope you'll forgive me if I updated the bathing suit a bit... the classic Julie Adams' is a bit too 50's...

MMMM Frankie

This week, I took a little more noodling time and probably shouldn't have. I was bored, sue me.

Anyways, This is Frankenstein's Monster and I played around with the pentel brush pen and pentel color brush which is kinda like a watercolour brush with the color in the shaft. Kinda fun. Also, as usual, copic markers. Hope you all enjoy!
