Champloo, Rince, Repeat by Shawn Dueck aka Archangel

"Fuu! They're at it again!"
There's only a billion people who could draw these characters better than this, but I really liked this series.

  1. ... and that, children, is how flip-flops were invented!

  2. No kidding! Those geta are wild. Apparently, in the Edo period, BYOB meant "bring-your-own-boardwalk".

  3. Cool. Like the watercolor in the background. Nice poses too.

BTW - one of your tags in Blair Shedd. I didn't do this. ;)

  4. Thanks, Blair.

All the time I was working on this, I was thinking of how you could do such an awesome Samurai Champloo image. And secretly hoping you wouldn't.

Kidding; I'd love to see your take on these guys.

As to the tags, I think your name is in there just because of the new theme, given that I posted right at midnight.

  5. ... Ohhhh - I thought you were outing Blair as the Secret Ninja... I thought, "phew! a braver man than I, Shaun - AND a damn slight closer to the potential 'fall out' zone!"

  6. oooohhh! You weren't supposed to mention that!

....and while Nigel is pulling the flying stars out of his tush, I should mention that I used Painter 10's Sumi-e, liquid ink, and digital watercolour brushes to make this sketch. That's right, those same fine folks at Corel who brought us the "disappearing brush selector bar" (!!!).

  7. Ah - you're supposed to tag yourself, so when people click on the name, it brings up all the artwork that you worked on for the blog. Right now, when clicked, it'll bring up this piece and my LM piece.

  8. What I'm saying is that you can edit that tag yourself, deleting my name, and adding in your own (where it says Blair Shedd, Samurai below your post - not where it says "This Week's Theme Chosen").

  9. Love the textured background! I like how you used the block flops as a defensive device.

  10. Thanks, Colby. That character will often use his geta to block attacks. He has metal plates on the bottoms just for that purpose.

    BTW Blair, tags fixed.

  11. Very cool combination of old sumi-e style watercolor painting + the modern stylization of the characters.
